Thomas Stangassinger had one of his best seasons ever in the 1998/99 campaign. At 34, he's like fine wine, getting better and better. Two victories and three other top three finishes led the 1994 Olympic Champion to win his first slalom World Cup title in 1999. This after what Stangassinger called disappointing 6th place finishes in 6th in the Nagano Olympics and Vail Worlds.
Stangassinger has 15 years of experience on the World Cup tour and flawless skiing technique. But its his coolness under pressure that wins races. He has won medals in three major events - bronze in 1991 and silver in 1993 at Ski World Championships and gold in the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics.
Born south of Salzburg, Thomas started competing on the World Cup tour in 1985. He won his first race in December 1989 in Canada. Injuries slowed his rise to stardom until the world bronze in 1991. Stangassinger was injured again in Summer 1994 when he fell during training. He also struggled with his skis before changing to Salomon skis three years ago. It was a good move. Suddenly he was back on top. His consistency helped him to win three races during the 1997/98 season and to fight until the last race against his teammate Tomas Sykora for the World Cup Slalom title. He lost it again at the finals in Crans-Montana.
Away from the "White Circus", Stangassinger loves nothing more than to be with his family. Married for the past six years, he has a daughter, Maria, who turned 5 last Summer. He skis with her during his holidays.
