Italy's Gustavo Thoeni was one of the first leaders of a new generation
of skiers produced by the World Cup tour.
Thoeni dominated the sport from the early 1970's and was a huge hero in
his own country.
A four-time Overall World Cup champion from 1971 to 1975, he also clinched five gold medals at Olympics and FIS World Championships from 1972 to 1976.
Gustavo helped launch one of the strongest Ski Teams on the World Cup, the famous "Valanga Azzurra" who set an impressive record in 1975 by taking all top-5 spots in a GS in Berchtesgaden, Germany.
His technique was extremely smooth and precise and he was very cool under
pressure.
Thoeni had some of his greatest wins in key race for World Cup standings
or attacking for gold at medal races.
The Italian nearly defeated the great Franz Klammer in 1975 on the treacherous Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbuhel.
He lost the race by only 1/100 of a second.
Gustavo competed until the Olympics in 1980 but returned to ski racing
later on as a coach.
He helped Alberto Tomba back to the top in the early 1990's when he was in charge of the technical training of the superstar from Bologna.
Thoeni is now the head-coach of the Italian men's team. He is married and has two daughters. |
