Beauty is more than skin deep for Maria Walliser.
The Swiss was only 18 when she scored her first World Cup points during the 1980/81 season, but had to wait six more years to become the beautiful queen of skiing on the World Cup tour.
She started as a technical skier, but became an outstanding downhiller
and won her first World Cup race in 1983.
Maria was the top-favorite for gold at the Olympic downhill in Sarajevo,
but she had settle for silver behind her teammate Michaela Figini.
It was huge disappointment for the proud and over-confident Maria.
She lost concentration when the competition had to be postponed for 24
hours because of bad weather. . |
The same misfortune happened again the following winter during the FIS
World Championships in Bormio.
But Maria learned her lesson and rebounded in 1986 to clinch her first Overall World Cup by winning four races including a GS.
Walliser peaked the following year at the FIS World Championships in Crans-Montana
in winning two gold medals in downhill and Super-G.
Thanks to her six World Cup victories, she took her second consecutive Overall World Cup trophy and became a popular star in Switzerland and around the world.
Maria also became a cover-girl in all the newspapers and magazines, and
was even approached by film-producers.
She was that beautiful.
Walliser worked with many sponsors including fashion modeling.
These distractions may have hurt her chances to win an Olympic title in
1988 at Calgary.
Walliser got only two bronze medals. But in 1989 she was back at the top
winning several races including the World Championship downhill in Vail,
Colorado.
That winter, Maria was the only skier to beat the superstar Vreni Schneider in a World Cup GS.
She won two more competitions in 1990, but decided to give up ski racing
to start a family.
Maria Walliser, the shinning ski queen, is now married with two children. |
