Born in West Germany, Hanni Wenzel competed for Liechtenstein after her father Hubert, who was also her first coach, moved into the Principality in the late 1950's.
She had still a West German passport in 1974 when she celebrated her first
major success at the FIS World Championships in St Moritz by winning the
slalom.
A few months later, the entire family received the citizenship from Liechtenstein
- a smart move by the tiny country since Hanny and her younger brother
Andreas accumulated many victories in the next ten years.
A slalom specialist at the beginning, Hannelore Wenzel grew into a solid
all-around skier by training with the Swiss team.
Hanny won her first Overall World Cup title in 1978.
A double Olympic champion in the technical events in 1980, she won her
second Crystal globe that winter along to her brother Andreas.
Several injuries prevented her from staying at the top level. But she returned
to the world's elite in 1983 and finished in 2nd place in the final World
Cup standings.
A year later, Wenzel scored victories in several specialties but despite her great form, she lost the Overall Cup in the last race against Switzerland's Erika Hess.
It was the second time that bad luck had struck: in 1979 Austrian legend
Annemarie Moser-Proell beat her in Japan by two points at the World Cup
finals.
After a brilliant 12-year-long career, Hanny stepped down from active ski
racing.
She had won 33 events in all alpine specialties and four gold medals in Olympics and Worlds.
She got into business an married Austria's Harti Weirather, the 1982 downhill
World Champion.
They started a family and a very successful marketing agency, WWP (Weirather,
Wenzel & Partners) which runs the Austrian World Cup races in behalf
of the Austrian Ski Federation. |
